PSG stun Manchester City 4-2 at the Etihad as Haaland breaks Agüero's record

The reigning European champions scored three times in 19 first-half minutes to inflict City's first defeat of the season, although Erling Haaland's double made him the club's all-time leading scorer in the Champions League.

Paris Saint-Germain beat Manchester City 4-2 at the Etihad Stadium in the early hours of Thursday, Singapore time, ending City's unbeaten start to the season and underlining why Luis Enrique's side arrived in Manchester as back-to-back European champions.

Désiré Doué, Ousmane Dembélé and Vitinha put the visitors three goals clear by the 32nd minute. Erling Haaland scored twice after the interval to give Enzo Maresca's side hope, but Maghnes Akliouche's strike in the 62nd minute kept PSG at arm's length.

A ruthless opening half hour

City started brightly and saw an effort deflected onto the crossbar by PSG goalkeeper Matvey Safonov in the 12th minute. Within a minute the game had turned. Doué opened the scoring in the 13th minute and Dembélé headed in from close range 99 seconds later.

Vitinha added a third in the 32nd minute. According to Opta data published by The Analyst, PSG had seven of their 10 first-half shots on target, and City went in three goals down at home at half-time for the first time since January 2012.

Haaland's double not enough

Haaland pulled one back in the 53rd minute, heading in a cross from Iliman Ndiaye. PSG restored their three-goal cushion nine minutes later when Akliouche's shot found its way past Gianluigi Donnarumma, the former PSG goalkeeper now playing for City, who got a hand to the ball but could not keep it out.

Haaland struck again in the 75th minute from Ayyoub Bouaddi's cutback. That goal took him past Sergio Agüero as City's all-time leading scorer in the Champions League, with 38 goals in 41 appearances for the club and 61 in the competition overall.

City pressed for a third and hit the woodwork twice more in the second half. Late on, PSG were awarded a penalty for a foul on Nuno Mendes, but Donnarumma kept out the spot kick from Ferran Torres, the former City striker.

The home side finished with 27 shots and an expected-goals total of 2.57, according to Opta, but conceded four or more goals at home in a European competition for the first time. Maresca told reporters afterwards that a team which does not go "toe-to-toe" with PSG will struggle, while insisting he felt his side were close.

Background and significance

The match carried extra intrigue because Pep Guardiola, who left City at the end of last season, watched from the stands on his first return to the Etihad since his departure. Maresca has replaced him as head coach.

For PSG, the result continued a formidable start to the campaign. They opened their league phase with a 6-1 win over Slovan Bratislava, and Opta said their 10 goals are the most by any side in the first two matches of a Champions League season. Dembélé also became only the third PSG player to score in six or more consecutive Champions League appearances.

Analysis: one defeat is far from decisive in a 36-team league phase, and City still have three points after winning 2-0 at Porto on Matchday 1. However, the manner of the first-half collapse will raise questions about City's defensive organisation under their new coach.

What happens next

Both clubs return to Champions League action on Tuesday 20 October. City host AEK Athens and PSG host Barcelona, with both matches kicking off at 21:00 Central European time, which is 03:00 SGT on Wednesday 21 October.
