Liverpool Stunned by Fenerbahce as Arsenal and Man City Win Narrowly
Liverpool suffered their first Champions League defeat of the season in a 3-2 loss at Fenerbahce, while Arsenal and Manchester City both earned narrow away wins.
Shock Defeat for Liverpool
The biggest upset of Matchday 4 came in Turkey, where Fenerbahce beat Liverpool 3-2. The defeat ended Liverpool’s perfect start to the Champions League campaign after three straight wins.
Liverpool started strongly and took the lead in the 25th minute with a powerful shot inside the box. Just four minutes later, Mason Greenwood’s free kick took a deflection and went in to make it 1-1 at half-time.
Liverpool brought on Cody Gakpo and Alexander Isak in the second half, and Isak headed them back in front in the 69th minute. But Fenerbahce hit back quickly. Archie Brown scored into an empty net in the 73rd minute, and six minutes later he set up the winning header. Liverpool have now dropped to eighth in the table.
Gyokeres Leads Arsenal to Victory
Premier League champions Arsenal beat Czech champions Slavia Prague 2-1 away. Arsenal are still unbeaten in this season’s Champions League, with three wins and a draw. They are third in the table with 10 points, behind only defending champions Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid.
Viktor Gyokeres played a key role. In the ninth minute, his through ball set up Noni Madueke, who scored with a low shot. In the 38th minute, Gyokeres curled a shot into the far corner to make it 2-0.
Arsenal slowed down in the second half, and Slavia pulled a goal back in stoppage time. The home side then put Arsenal under pressure with several set pieces, but Gabriel made a vital clearance and goalkeeper David Raya made a number of important saves.
Haaland Wins It for City
Manchester City won a thrilling game 3-2 away at RB Leipzig, bouncing back from two straight league defeats. City now have three wins and one defeat and sit seventh in the table.
City took the lead in the 37th minute when Nico O’Reilly’s cross was turned into his own net by Castello Lukeba. Ridle Baku equalised from a tight angle in the 49th minute. Enzo Fernandez headed City back in front in the 58th minute, but Antonio Nusa made it 2-2 three minutes later with a low shot.
In the 78th minute, Elliot Anderson crossed from the right, and Erling Haaland slid in at the back post to score the winner. Leipzig thought they had equalised late on, but the goal was ruled out for offside.
