When does a screen become a foul?

The details of positioning and contact make all the difference.

Position matters

A screen is not automatically legal just because the screener appears to be standing still. The NBA’s video rulebook shows examples involving an extended leg or a stance outside shoulder width that creates illegal contact.

Watch the contact

The official clips are useful because a written description can miss the timing of an action. Look at the screener’s position, the defender’s path and the point of contact together. A single frozen image may not tell the whole story.

Use the official examples

Our recommendation for curious viewers: compare more than one example before drawing a conclusion about a call. The NBA’s video rulebook gives a clearer reference than a short social clip without context. Rules and interpretations also vary across competitions, so use the relevant competition’s guidance.
