BasketballThe playbook

Two players. One screen. A world of possibilities.

The pick-and-roll is a simple idea that asks difficult questions of a defence.

Start with the screen

In a pick-and-roll, one offensive player sets a screen for a teammate handling the ball, then moves toward the basket. That movement gives the ball handler another passing option as the defence responds.

Read the space

The Jr. NBA teaching resource introduces the basic action. When watching it in a game, follow both players rather than only the ball. The screen, the route around it and the roll toward the rim are parts of the same sequence.

Try this on the next possession

Our viewing suggestion: choose one screen and keep your eyes on the screener. Notice when they stop, when they turn and where they go. Then replay the action while watching the ball handler. The same possession often looks different when you change your point of focus.
