Chia Wei Jie and Teo Ee Yi Reach Korea Open Quarter-Finals
Malaysian independent men’s doubles pair Chia Wei Jie and Teo Ee Yi have reached the quarter-finals of the Korea Open. It is their best result at a Super 500 tournament since they started playing together in May.
Easy Win in the Second Round
Chia Wei Jie and Teo Ee Yi, ranked world No. 39, beat Chinese Taipei’s Ho Chih-wei and Huang Jui-hsuan, ranked world No. 38, on Thursday. The Malaysians won in straight games, 21-9 and 21-19.
It was the first time the two pairs had met. The Malaysians controlled the first game easily and stayed calm to close out a tighter second game.
Best Result as a New Pair
Wei Jie and Ee Yi only started playing together in the middle of May this year. Reaching the last eight in a Super 500 event is a big step forward for the young partnership.
The pair are also in good form this week. They pulled off the biggest upset on the opening day by knocking out China’s world No. 11 Chen Boyang and Liu Yi, who were the fourth seeds, winning 21-14, 21-19 in Yeosu.
Tough Test in the Quarter-Finals
In the quarter-finals, Wei Jie and Ee Yi will face the winner of a match between two strong pairs. One is the Malaysia-South Korea pair Goh V Shem and Choi Sol-gyu. The other is Japan’s former world champions Yugo Kobayashi and Takuro Hoki.
Malaysian fans will hope the independent pair can keep their good run going and push for a place in the semi-finals.
