Viking snatch late 3-3 draw against ten-man Bayern Munich
The Norwegian side led 2-0 at half-time, fell behind after a Harry Kane-inspired fightback, then equalised in the final minute of normal time after Michael Olise was sent off.
Bayern Munich dropped their first points of the Champions League campaign on Tuesday night in Norway, where Viking FK came from behind to earn a 3-3 draw with a header in the final minute of regulation time.
Harry Kane scored twice and Luis Díaz added a third as Vincent Kompany's side recovered from a two-goal half-time deficit. But Michael Olise's dismissal for a second yellow card in the 73rd minute left the German champions with ten men, and substitute Herman Johan Haugen punished them at the death.
Viking's dream start
The hosts struck within two minutes through Stensness, according to Bayern's official match report, and doubled their lead in the 38th minute when Peter Christiansen scored. Bayern, playing on artificial turf in front of a crowd listed at 15,900, went into the interval 2-0 down.
Kompany responded with three half-time changes, bringing on Dayot Upamecano, Alphonso Davies and Ismael Saibari for Jonathan Tah, Nathaniel Brown and Lennart Karl.
Kane leads the comeback
The changes had an immediate effect. Kane converted a penalty in the 54th minute and headed in Joshua Kimmich's cross six minutes later to level the match. In the 71st minute Díaz put Bayern ahead after a move involving Konrad Laimer and Kane.
Two minutes later the game swung again. Olise, already on a yellow card, was shown a second booking after throwing the ball at Viking's Tripić, according to reports from the match. Viking pushed forward and, in the last minute of normal time, Haugen met a cross from Tripić to head the equaliser.
According to the US-based Bayern fan site Bavarian Football Works, Kompany pointed to his side's mistakes and the red card as the decisive factors after the match.
Background and significance
The result gives Viking their first point of the league phase after a 3-1 defeat at Stuttgart on Matchday 1. Bayern, who opened with a 5-0 home win over Bodø/Glimt, now have four points from two matches.
Analysis: it was one of the most eye-catching results of a high-scoring week in the competition. For Viking, a point against one of Europe's strongest clubs is a significant marker. For Bayern, the concern will be the slow start and the discipline issue that cost them two points, rather than the attacking response, which again showed Kane's influence.
What happens next
Bayern host RB Leipzig in the Bundesliga on Saturday 17 October. In the Champions League, both teams play on Wednesday 21 October: Bayern host Arsenal and Viking travel to Aston Villa, who beat Fenerbahçe 6-0 this week. Both matches start at 03:00 SGT on Thursday 22 October.
